Stars Honored at Golden Ring Awards
By Nicole C. Wong
Exclusive photos and video of the stars - COMING SOON! Asian American performers celebrated their
progress in film, music, and other art forms while advocating stronger community support of minority artists during a recent awards ceremony.
The Asian American Arts Foundation hosted the biennual Golden Ring Awards at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts on October 2. Created in 1995 to recognize Asian
Americans' contributions to the arts, the third show occurred in the wake of the Asian, Hispanic and African American communities' criticism of "whitewashed" network television.
The scarcity of ethnic characters in network shows prompted a national press conference to address the issue and a call to boycott the networks during September.
This year, not a single new network television show features an Asian American leading character, according to AAAF. "We hope that the Golden Ring Awards is one
small step to representing the talent that we have in our community," said Jeff Adachi, chairman of the organization's board of directors. "We know it's there. We've got to
support it. We've got to promote it." AC Team member Nicole C. Wong is a junior at U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business majoring in business
administration and pursuing a career in journalism. She has written for Asian Week, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other publications. She was the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Reporting Intern at the
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in New York, a Gannett publication. Wong serves as a board of directors student representative for the Asian American Journalists Association's San Francisco Chapter and works for
fair and accurate coverage of Asian Pacific communities. |
